A dental emergency can happen in many forms, including an injury to the mouth, a knocked-out tooth, or an unassuming toothache. While it might be unsettling or overwhelming, it could help to ease your concerns by knowing the typical procedures your dentist could perform. Keep reading to learn the four most common dental emergency treatments you can expect!

#1: Dental Fillings

Sometimes people lose their old filling and need to get it replaced. While this might not cause discomfort, it’s still a smart move to inform your dentist of the situation. This will also be performed if you have cavities to protect the exposed tooth from infection or further damage.

#2: Tooth Reattachment

If you enjoy playing sports or any other physical activity, then you know the risks of getting a tooth knocked-out. Though this can be alarming you’ll want to handle the tooth carefully, so your dentist has a better chance at reattaching it in its socket. Firstly, pick up the tooth by the crown instead of the roots to avoid damaging them. Rinse it gently with water and try preserving it in a cup or Ziploc bag of milk. If it’s still intact, then you can attempt to place it in its socket until you see your dentist.

#3: Root Canal Therapy

Toothaches might seem minor most times, but they can also be symptoms of a more serious health issue that requires immediate attention. If it’s due to something dire like a tooth fracture or cavity, then your dentist will need to treat it with a root canal. This is especially necessary if there’s an abscess within the tooth, as you’ll need the infection to be taken out entirely to save your pearly white.

#4: Tooth Extraction

There are times when the tooth is too far damaged or decayed, so your dentist will have to extract it. This procedure is usually a last resort and it’s recommended that you consider a root canal before proceeding. Extracted teeth can lead to other procedures that might be expensive, such as dental implants.

Dental emergency procedures vary depending on the issue, but all are meant to help protect and maintain your oral health. Speak with your dentist if you want to become more familiar with the possible treatments or if you’d like to learn best practices to keep your smile in great condition!
