Are you unsatisfied with the state of your oral health? Do you wish that you had a more beautiful smile? If you answered “yes” to either of these questions, now is the time to do something about it! With new Year’s right around the corner, why not set a goal to take better care of your teeth over the next 365 days? Read on for five ideas for New Year’s resolutions that will hep you gain a healthy smile you’ll be proud to show off.

#1: Visit the Dentist

Twice per year, schedule an appointment with your dentist so they can do a thorough exam of the oral cavity. This will allow them to identify and administer treatment for any oral health issues you have. During these appointments, your hygienist will also thoroughly clean your teeth and around your gum line. By removing buildups of plaque and tartar, you’ll be less likely to develop oral health issues like gum disease and cavities.

#2: Brush and Floss Better

Brush your teeth in the morning before you eat breakfast. This will eliminate bacteria that accumulated in your mouth while you were asleep. Brush your teeth before you go to bed as well to remove plaque and food particles. Additionally, floss at least once per day to get rid of 40% of the plaque on your pearly whites.

#3: Conquer Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is caused by inadequate saliva production. If it’s being caused by an underlying oral health issue, your dentist will be able to identify and treat the problem. Additionally, drinking plenty of water throughout the day will help you wash away harmful oral bacteria and prevent issues like cavities, gum disease, and mouth sores.

#4: Cut Out Tobacco and Drink Less Alcohol

Smoking cigarettes and drinking large quantities of alcohol can both lead to dry mouth. Tobacco products can also lead to serious oral health issues, including gum disease, oral cancer, and a range of other cancers. For that reason, cut back on these bad habits to improve your oral health. If you need help quitting, reach out to your dentist, doctor, or therapist and ask for resources that will help.

#5: Brighten Your Smile

Drinking tea, dark sodas, coffee, and red wine will lead to unsightly stains forming on your pearly whites. Cut back on these beverages or drink them through a straw to limit the amount of contact they have with your teeth. Additionally, ask your dentist about their smile whitening services to brighten your beam.

Over the next 365 days, use the above tips to shape up your smirk. By this time next year, you can be sporting a smile you love!
