What Are Implant Dentures?
A traditional denture is made up of a gum-colored base and multiple false teeth. An implant denture also follows this basic design, but Dr. Song will take things a step further by connecting the denture base to a set of dental implants posts. From there, an implant denture can either be fixed or removable. You can read more about the two types of implant dentures below.
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures
As the name suggests, fixed/permanent implant dentures are not meant to be removed. You’ll wear them 24/7, and can clean them like you would natural teeth.
Removable Implant Dentures
This type of implant denture has a “snap-on” mechanism that will allow you to remove it at your convenience. Caring for removable implant dentures is a bit different, but rest assured, Dr. Song will give you thorough instructions so you can promote the longevity of your restoration.
The Implant Denture Process
First, Dr. Song will meet with you for a consultation. This will allow him to examine your mouth, determine your tooth replacement needs, and plan your treatment accordingly. It’s also a good time for you to ask questions or voice concerns.
After completing any necessary preliminary treatments (like bone grafting or gum disease therapy), you’ll schedule implant surgery with our office. No referral needed! Dr. Song will make sure your comfortable, then place the dental implants along your jawbone.
For the next three to six months, your jawbone and the biocompatible implant posts will be gradually fusing together through a process known as osseointegration. It’s important to follow Dr. Song’s post-op instructions during this time.
Once your mouth has healed, we’ll take impressions of your mouth and customize the denture portion of your restoration. When it’s ready, all that’s left to do is connecting the denture to your implants. Dr. Song will confirm that the restoration is secure and feels comfortable, and you’ll be free to enjoy your new smile!
Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?
Implant dentures are best for patients missing an entire arch of teeth. Otherwise, all you need to be considered a good candidate is a clean bill of dental health and dedication to maintaining good oral hygiene habits.
Remember that if you do have dental health issues, we can help you treat your condition. Many of our patients who receive preliminary treatments become excellent candidates for implant dentures!
