woman with pumpkinHalloween is just around the corner, which means creative costumes, spooky decorations, and yummy treats. As you enjoy the festivities of the evening, your oral health is the last thing on your mind. If you do not keep it a priority, it could lead to unfortunate news during your next visit to your dentist. Although it may only be one night of overindulging on candy, you do not want to compromise your dental health in the process. There are several tips to keep in mind to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Avoid Sweet Treats

It is best to avoid sweet treats that contain large amounts of sugar. When the sugars combine with your saliva, it turns them to an acid, which slowly eats away at your enamel. As an alternative, it is best to skip the candy and treats to choose fresh fruits and vegetables. If you cannot ignore your sweet tooth, be sure to brush your teeth afterward.

Pick Candy Wisely

When eating candy, it is best to choose those that dissolve quickly, like chocolate. You should skip ones that are chewy, gummy, or sticky because they cling to your teeth. They get trapped in the crevasses of your molars where they are hard to remove. This can increase your risk of tooth decay if you do not brush properly.

Choose Sugar-Free Gum

Sugar-free gum is a safer alternative to most candies, and not just because it does not contain cavity-causing sugars. It also increases your saliva production, which helps to cleanse your teeth in between brushing.

Drink Water

Water is important for staying hydrated, but it is also vital for reducing harmful bacteria in your mouth. It helps to rinse away bacteria and sugar when you cannot brush your teeth. Whenever possible, skip soda and sugary drinks for a glass of tap water.

Skip Hard Candies

Hard candies contain large amounts of damaging sugars, but they also increase your risk of a dental emergency. If you bite or chew on one, it could result in a broken or fractured tooth. You do not want an unexpected trip to your emergency dentist ruining your evening, so choose a piece of chocolate instead.

Maintain Your Oral Hygiene

Although the night will be busy, do not skip your oral hygiene routine. Take the time to brush your teeth for at least two minutes using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste. Clean all surfaces of your teeth and your tongue. Do not forget to floss in between each too as well.
