Whether it happens while tripping, playing sports,\nor even walking into a glass door, it\u2019s important that you take the proper\nsteps to preserve the tooth so that your dentist has the best chance of saving\nit. You may have heard that you should store a dislodged tooth in its socket to\nkeep it alive until you can reach your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dereksongdmd.com\/emergency-dentistry.html\">dentist\u2019s office<\/a>.\nIs it really possible to put a knocked-out tooth back into its socket by\nyourself? Keep reading below to find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can You Place a Knocked-Out Tooth Back in Your Mouth?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When a tooth is knocked out, it\u2019s entirely possible to store\nit in the socket, at least until your dentist can forge a more permanent reattachment.\nHowever, there are other protocols you should follow to increase the chance of\nsuccessful reimplantation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, locate the tooth and pick it up only by the crown\n(the shiny white portion that you see when you smile) and <em>not<\/em> the\npointed root. Give it a quick rinse with milk or cold water. Do not scrub it,\napply any kind of disinfectant, or dry it. Doing so could damage the delicate\nroot cells that are needed to reconnect the tooth to the gums. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the tooth looks clean, gently position it back into the\nsocket. You can keep it in place by softly biting down with it onto a handkerchief\nor napkin. Then, call your dentist\u2019s office as soon as you can. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Time Is of the Essence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A knocked-out tooth can only survive outside of the mouth\nfor about an hour. After that, the odds of it being successfully reattached decrease\nsignificantly. That\u2019s why calling an emergency dentist should be your first priority\nif you lose an adult tooth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, the tooth must remain wet. Otherwise, the\ncells along the tooth\u2019s roots will dry out and die, rendering them unable to\nconnect to the gum tissue. Placing it inside the socket, in your cheek pocket,\nor in a container of milk can keep it viable until your dentist addresses the\nproblem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Your Dentist Can Reattach the Tooth <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In most cases, your dentist will use a splint to connect the\nknocked-out tooth with a neighboring one. Often, the lost tooth will appear\ndiscolored and will require additional work even after it has been reimplanted.\nHowever, this is a slight inconvenience compared to the problems that can\ndevelop if the tooth is not repositioned in a timely manner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Millions of teeth are knocked out every year as a result of\naccidents and sports-related injuries.
